About Matha

The Earth is in grave danger. Man’s impudent actions have brought inimical repercussions upon him and other living organisms, which may accompany mankind to its downfall and fauna and flora to the brink of extinction. Deforestation in the name of development is one such crucial facet which bring about global warming, increase in the carbon footprints and soil erosion which in turn give rise to melting of glaciers, increase in the sea level threatening some islands to vanish, pollution of air resulting in various illnesses, lands becoming barren thus posing a threat to cultivation, contamination of water streams, irregular rains, destruction of animal habitats thus challenging the balance of bio diversity and the list goes on…

Matha is born to realize the dream of a society coexists with nature. Man’s technological advances, although should be used for the betterment of the world, have now become the cause of the crisis the world is facing today, because of its uncritical utilization to realize the dreams of power-hungry improvident set of people.

Even though the industrial revolution paved the pathway for science and technology to create a revolutionary change in the world during the past 50 years and was able to make life more convenient, it also has given rise to numerous issues. The carbon emission from the burning of charcoal, oil and gas has put the world in grave danger. The “developed countries” which amounts to 20% of the entire world population are responsible for this. This can be curtailed through the usage of alternative sources of power such as solar power and wind power, but it has become a tug of war owing to the monopoly of the owners of oil and charcoal reserves. Although the UN has taken crucial decisions about this, they have not been put in to action as significantly as required to prevent the destruction.

Commercialization and extreme modernization have caused huge damage to biodiversity. The modern scientific agriculture has not been successful in catering to the food requirement of the population of the whole world – which is about 7 Billion and counting…

Still, 1,000 million lives are not sufficiently provided with food. They suffer from hunger. Deforesting lands to boost the growth of commercial crops, is led by extreme financial objectives. These powerful business tycoons also destroy food in order to control the global price scales. In 1860, when Sri Lanka was under the British rule, enterprises were carried-out to convert the entire island to a tea-estate. The rain forests and the central highlands were destroyed for this purpose. We now face the consequences of the ruination brought upon a land enriched with vivid biodiversity where elephants, leopards and bears used to wander and 102 rivers nourished the soil. Similarly, during the last century, belligerent nations deforested many lands to clear the way for the cultivation of commercial crops viz. tobacco, wheat, corn, batana, gherkin, coffee, tea, cocoa etc. Even though the nourishment requirements of the entire population can be fulfilled without such a destruction, the uncritical commercial objectives of man have left the Earth with crucial issues to find solutions to.

The miraculous development has not been able to solve the issues of mankind. Only a mere 20% of the population has reached the level of modern development. And another 20% are at the bottom suffering from extreme poverty. The countries enriched in biodiversity and natural resources have become poor due to looting and invasions.

The sad story is that powerful men are using the knowledge of science and technology to fill their wallets with no consideration to the environment which has given the rise to several problems.

    • The climate change which poses a huge threat to man and environment alike
    • The hunger endured by about 1,000 million people despite the technological advances
    • The sufferings caused by diseases and epidemics
    • The dearth of mental happiness and wellbeing in the so called developed nations. Those nations suffer more from nervousness and problematic human relationships than poor countries.
    • The increase in the environmental calamities

The challenges cannot be overcome only through science and technology. The time has come to look beyond the horizon to change the direction of the journey to a path which focusses on the conversation of nature. Food can be provided/produced to twice as the population of the world as of now, with no use of any insecticides, pesticides and/or fungicides in its production. Nevertheless, the money-making objectives of commercial organizations do not let an alternative solution to rise.

We must rethink of the existence of human civilization. We all know that this life of ours is temporary. Most of us are on a relentless pursuit to satisfy our hunger for ephemeral material development and there is not a single soul that has reached that complete satisfaction. The modern development is not crafted to align with the mental wellbeing of man. It is created and carried-out based on the misconception of achieving completeness through materialstic notions. Hence, we should move to a new social structure where the basic human necessities are satisfied. It is our endeavor to change the course of the journey to a toxin-free cultivation and an alternative source of power to reduce the air pollution.

A healthy world can be built on the foundation of toxin-free food, proper exercise, appropriate environmental sorroundings and mental wellbeing. The opposite of this has made the world fall ill. We stand for a healthy world devoid of such bad omens. That can only be achieved through correct life policies.

We envisage a future where people abstain from high consumption and think about each other. The intentions of the 100 million tree enterprise of ours are not just the immediate benefits that can be harvested from it, but much more, both short and long term, in various facets. Join with us in this great cause to take the message of importance of living in coexistence with nature, conserving it and getting protected in return.

A well-grown tree is similar to 17 air conditioners. The amount of water particles released to the environment is two hundred thousand. Nitrogen fixing trees are beneficial in various ways. A tree helps to protect the dampness of the soil and assists in the development and amelioration of miscellaneous ecosystems. Stops soil erosion. Protects sources of water. Releases water for rivers and lakes. Brings nourishment to barren lands. Provides shelter. Safeguards nature. Converts carbon dioxide to oxygen.

A tree itself, is our life. Let’s join hands in the good cause of planting a tree – “the tree” which gives us life…

Let’s plant a tree and heal the world.

The Vision

” The initiative of planting 100 million trees to preserve and safeguard the Earth and its fauna and flora. “

Ven. Athuraliye Rathana entered the Buddhist priesthood at a young age. After completing the conventional Buddhist education, he took on an Honorary Degree on philosophy at the University of Peradeniya. He was a distinguishable character among the student movements since his time at the University and after, who raised his voice against social injustice and conservation of environment. He has also been an active Member of the Parliament of Sri Lanka for more than 15 years.

Ven. Athuraliya Rathana has contributed immensely to liberate the country from the 30 year terrifying terrorism and possible foreign threats. Especially, the walk he pioneered oppugning the act of and bringing to the limelight the detrimental consequences of closing the sluice gate in Mawillaru in Eastern Province of Sri Lanka, made him a national hero.

His dedication and contribution in conserving the environment is praiseworthy. He was successful in creating a tangible, effective awareness and public opinion regarding toxin-free cultivation in 2010, and was able to organize the farmers for this enterprise and put it into action in a productive fashion. It was because of him, the promotion and advertising of pesticides got banned and the use of glyphosate came to an end in 2016.

Ven. Rathana participated in the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference held in Paris, as a government representative. Moreover, several other conferences pertaining to climate change were also held with inter-religious parties. He proposed the new idea that the principles of climate change should be put into action in the countries with less than 2 ton carbon capacity, to which many international environmentalists agreed.

Mission

This is an endeavor to see beyond the miracles man has created on the Earth soil, to understand the crisis he brought upon himself and to find a fruitful solution to it. Concealing the grave environmental challenges is the facade of development and modernization which has been escalating the crisis over the past 150 years. Man who chased an impossible wonderland powered by an unquenchable thirst and hard-to-satisfy desire, worked his fingers to the bones to create a heaven on the Earth. Nevertheless, during that pursuit, burning of charcoal and oil released a large quantity of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere which created a lot of detrimental repercussions. Global warming, melting of glaciers, irregular rains, floods, landslides, climatic changes, epidemics etc. will accompany humankind to the brink of oblivion. Hence, there is a need for a new awakening in order to overcome such an ominous future and to secure the continuous existence of nature.

Notwithstanding the dangerous situation and the probable consequences of the so called “development”, the powerful nations are not ready to and it is not as easy a task as said or imagined for them to let go of the systems, sciences and technologies which made them “developed” !

The fauna and flora are in grave danger. Even though the 2015 Paris Climate Change Conference raised the issue and the need for a discussion on the matter, it seems that its proposals have not been put in to action yet.

The major cause of this crisis is the toxic carbon dioxide which has been releasing to the environment since the industrial revolution, for 150 years. The injudicious and uncritical use of science and technology to empower the nations, created conflict and turmoil leading to wars. The “development” has left us with various issues.

This modernization which was led by the desire for quick profits and ROIs, although created colossal luxury modern cities, the reality is far from it. The release of large quantities of energy has resulted in a climate change. Floods, droughts, irregular rains, destruction of agricultural lands and melting of glaciers resulting in the increase in the sea level bear testimony to it. Some bio systems are on the brink of extinction. Global warming is a serious threat. Many islands are under the threat of being submerged…

Use of fossil fuel and deforestation in the name of development have destroyed the equilibrium of nature. The greed for higher profits motivated man to use toxins in cultivation which in turn polluted soil, air and water. Moreover, man is more susceptible to Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) now, than before. The modern development has forced us to live in fear and nervousness.

This has necessitated the awakening of an intelligent set of people in order to curtail the destruction and save the Earth. If the future of the world was given to a power-hungry community, it would result in the end of the civilization sooner than we envisage. Hence, considering the situation, it is high time that the course of the journey is changed. It is our expectation to start the initiative of planting 100 million trees from Sri Lanka – the pearl of the Indian Ocean, and spread it to the entire world with the intention of bringing the need for this to the limelight, opening their eyes and congregating them for this great cause and also calling them for an alternative solution.
